Doctor Duo Combines Thriving Practice and Lake Living

Whether by coincidence or by namesake, Doctors of Optometry Susan and Jason Lake are Lake People.  Six years ago, this husband and wife team took the plunge and moved to Lake Winnebago, an idyllic community seven miles outside Lee’s Summit.

“We love lake people,” says Susan Lake OD, FCOVD.  “There’s something so down-to-earth and fun-loving about people who choose to live year-round at the lake. We ski in the summer and sit by the fire in our backyard in the cooler months just watching the water.”

Although they enjoyed living in Warrensburg for 14 years, when they stumbled upon the city of Lake Winnebago, it caught their eyes.  They became enamored with the idea of year-round lake living. Today, with their three daughters, ages 16, 14, and 6, Team Lake can be found waterskiing, wakeboarding, or enjoying a sunset cruise around the beautiful 405-acre lake.

“There’s nothing like it,” Dr. Susan says. “The lake is easy to play on and beautiful to cruise around.  The new expansion and resulting lake front lots will be exciting to see come to fruition over the next few years.  It’s therapy to enjoy the peaceful nature of this lakeside community. We believe in the saying, ‘If you’re lucky enough to live at the lake, you’re lucky enough.’”

But luck favors the prepared, and this successful couple didn’t achieve their dreams by sitting on the dock wasting time.  With 46 employees at four thriving locations (Warrensburg, Clinton, Sedalia and Lee’s Summit), Drs. Lake have been focused on providing optimal eye care to their patients at Eyecare Specialties.

“We’re aware that people have many choices when it comes to eye care, and we’re thrilled when they choose us,” Dr. Susan says. “We take the responsibility seriously and will only give it our very best.  We don’t believe in giving partial effort. We care about our patients as people, and we treat them with importance. I adore the fact that I chat with 20-30 unique patients a day. I examine 6-month-old babies to 100+-year-old seniors.  Imagine all that I get to see and learn.”

With her Fellowship in Pediatric Optometry, Dr. Susan is passionate about ensuring that kids have their vision ready for the classroom and optimal learning.

“Kids should get their first eye exam at six months, then at three years, and every year after they start school,” she says. “I don’t think we’ve done a great job as a profession letting parents know how essential early eye exams are!”

Along with exams, Eyecare Specialties carries exciting frame lines offering affordable luxury as well as give-back corporate structures for their products.

“We house a product line that plants a tree for every frame sold.  This type of give back gives consumers such power in aligning their purchases with their social passions,” she says.

Dr. Susan acknowledges that having two working parents and three busy kids all involved in sports makes for a tight family schedule, but teamwork, shared responsibilities, and a sense of humor makes it work.

“No matter what, our family laughs together,” Dr. Susan says.  “We laugh through funny times but also use humor to get through stressful times.  We also make sure that we work together as a team for the greater good not just for individual gain.”

With humility, commitment to quality service, and a likeable personality, Dr. Susan Lake is impressive and enjoyable.

“I honestly LOVE helping people see better.  It’s an honor to care for the precious sense of sight,” she says and adds, “Oh, and by the way, there’s no wrong answer to Better or Worse? I promise.”
