Q& A with Lauren Pope of the Truman Heartland Community Foundation
Tell us a little bit about Boomers Get Connected
Boomers Get Connected is a program started by the Truman Heartland Community Foundation in partnership with United Way to help baby boomers get involved in their community through the free, online volunteer database. Anyone can register for a free account and find hundreds of volunteer opportunities serving Eastern Jackson County. When you sign up with Get Connected, you’ll start receiving email listings of volunteer opportunities that fit your interests.
What was the inspiration behind starting this organization?
Volunteering allows older adults to continue to give back to their community after they leave the workforce, as well as provides them with opportunities to socialize, get physical activity and have a sense of community. Because so many in our local communities will soon be in this age group, we decided we wanted to create a place for them to easily access volunteer opportunities that fit their skills.
What volunteer and serving opportunities are available through Boomers Get Connected?
We connect people to many nonprofit organizations, such as Hillcrest Transitional Housing, Truman Habitat for Humanity, Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation, Rainbow Center, Hope House, and so many more. Because there is such a diverse group of organizations posting opportunities on Get Connected, there is sure to be something for everyone who signs up to volunteer.
How can people in Lee’s Summit get involved?
When you sign up with the Get Connected website, you have the option to search for volunteer opportunities by distance from a certain ZIP code, so that you can find the charities near your home that need volunteers. You can also search volunteer opportunities by organization name, your interests, by the date the event takes place on and much more. There’s an option to search for wheelchair accessibility as well as a filter for family-friendly events so the whole family can get involved.
If I am local organization in the Lee’s Summit area that could use volunteers and would love to be connected to you, what is that process?
Nonprofits can create a profile on the Get Connected website here, UnitedWayGKC.GalaxyDigital.com/Agency/Signup. Once the profile has been created and approved by Get Connected, that organization will receive an email to add the volunteer opportunities on the website.
